MayoShinDo Karate

MayoShinDo Karate is based on original Shotokan karate from Okinawa, and the Chinese martial arts of Hsing I, Ba Gua and Tai Chi Chuan. It is principally a striking art so we practise a wide range of techniques including punches, kicks, blocks, footwork and avoidance. We also practise falls and rolls, joint locks and general self-defence techniques.

Our whole style is about good technique and movement rather than force. A strike must be correctly targeted and must use the the whole body for the greatest effect, but must be done in a relaxed, fluid and controlled manner.

Classes

A typical class will start with about 15 minutes of warm-up exercises. There is no minimum fitness requirement, though. Anyone can do it. We then move on to practising a range of techniques in different ways. That might be individual practise with an imaginary opponent to learn a new technique or refine one you know, or could be partnered or group practise or could be hitting foam pads and punchbags. All our techniques and practise methods are designed to be safe and non-damaging to us as practitioners, so even the partnered practise is done in a controlled and cooperative manner with nobody getting hurt.

As well as individual techniques, we practise a number of ways of putting techniques together in practical combinations. For example, there are sequences of blocks and kicks, and of steps and blocks. We aso practise kata, which are set sequences of steps, blocks and strikes in different directions.

Kids Karate Classes

Designed to be fun, practical and safe our kids karate classes teach students the fundamentals of martial arts with the main focus on self-defence and self-discipline. Students will have a comprehensive syllabus to learn which will increases in difficulty as progress through the grades.

Our kids karate classes include group activities to promote team bonding and teamwork allowing students to improve their leadership skills along the way. We also use games to liven up our classes. Each one relates to an aspect of martial arts and is designed to improve the childs development.

Adults Karate Classes

Many non-martial artists believe martial arts to be an agressive fitness activity where you can learn some cool moves seen in films. However, the benefits of martial arts for adults are much more extensive and subtle than that. Martial arts for adults can improve your mental strength, change your outlook on life, allow you to adapt to different situations, and improve your social life.

You don't have to be fit, supple or athletic before you start. All these qualities will improve over time with your training, wherever you start from. It is never too late to begin your karate journey.

We have a comprehensive syllabus which guides students from beginner to their first black belt and beyond. See our timetable for our list of classes or contact us to find out more.

Benefits to children

Children that learn karate can benefit in many ways, the main benefits are listed below.

RESPECT & DISCIPLINE

Kids that attend our karate classes learn the importance of respect and self-discipline from the start of their training, learning to follow instructions given to them, learning to control their enthusiasm and focus on the techniques. This leads to students becoming role models inside and outside of class. The kids also learn that karate is not to be used to hurt people at school or outside and is only to be used as a form of self-defence.

CONFIDENCE

Due to our well researched and refined syllabus set for each grade, students are able to set and surpass regular targets and milestones leading them to experience a sense of accomplishment that bolsters self-esteem and instils a positive "can-do" attitude. Given time, children start to build confidence in themselves and form a trust relationship with their fellow students which helps them at school and with their social skills.

SELF-DEFENCE

Our students are taught that karate is only to be used as a means of self-defence and protection. The philosophy of karate is that the first move is a defensive one not an attack.

CO-ORDINATION

MayoShinDo karate classes are great for helping children improve their all-round co-ordination with various activities designed specifically with co-ordination in mind.

FOCUS

Students will gain from improved levels of focus and attention due to learning to focus solely on the task given to them and not be too distracted by what other students are doing.

FITNESS

MayoShinDo karate will help your child to improve balance, flexibility, strength and all round general fitness.

Benefits to adults

Adults who learn karate benefit in a number of ways. Karate has many health benefits some of which are listed below.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Karate can have a great impact on your physical health, improving general fitness, flexibility, agility, strength and suppleness as well as aiding weight loss(along with good diet), reducing cholesterol and blood pressure.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

We often find our mind wandering, thinking about every day stress in our lives. Karate teaches us to become more focused by recognizing when we are off-task and taking action, teaching you to regroup by interrupting your train of thought and prepare to refocus by directing your attention back to the present.

SOCIAL LIFE

In adulthood, it can be very tough for some to find peers with mutual interests and outlooks. Martial arts is a great place to meet new people, from all walks of life, and the shared dedication to their art can help bond people. Lifelong friends are made all the time at martial arts gyms; going through difficult trials - such as gradings or simply mastering a move you find tricky - can really help create social bonds between friends.

CONFIDENCE

Due to our well researched and refined syllabus set for each grade, students are able to set and surpass regular targets and milestones leading them to experience a sense of accomplishment that bolsters self-esteem and instils a "can-do" attitude allowing the student to build confidence in themselves and form a trust relationship with their fellow students whilst improving their social skills.

SELF-DEFENCE AND PERSONAL SAFETY

Self-defence has many aspects - conflict avoidance, physical evasion, the use of effective striking techniques, manipulation and locking techniques, groundwork, and so much more. Learning self defence builds your confidence and increases your ability to protect yourself and your family.
